Neurology is the specialist branch of Medicine that deals with the nervous system - the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles. The special senses of smell, vision, hearing and balance also often involve neurologists usually overlapping with ophthalmologists (eye specialists),and Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeons. Neurologists do not perform surgery which is done by Neurosurgeons. The two specialities, by necessity, have to work closely together.
The neurology unit has 18 large rooms recently refurbished to the highest standard and all en suite. 24 hour medical cover is offered by the RMO and there is an on call rota shared by 8 consultant neurologists.
The unit is supported by a 64 slice CT scanner, two MRI scanners and an advanced interventional radiology department. The unit boasts an international workforce reflecting the diversity of patients admitted. The nursing staffs have all had post graduate training in neurological disorders and are complimented by specially trained neuro physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, dieticians and pharmacists.
