The Cardiac Imaging and Research Centre based in the South Tower of the Wellington Hospital undertakes research in conjunction with the British Cardiac Research Trust. The centre has just installed the UK's first Dual Source and Dual Energy CT Scanner along with the first private sector Hybrid Nuclear Medicine Scanner with CT technology (SPECT-CT) and is now available privately for cardiac screening.

The major advantage of the Dual Source CT Scanner over current 64 slice CT scanners is that no preparation is needed for the patient and patients do no have to stop current medication beforehand and the whole process is completed in under 15 minutes. The Hybrid Nuclear Medicine Scanner combines traditional nuclear medicine capabilities with structural information from the CT Scan, which allows composite images with superior diagnostic capabilities.

Professor Avijit Lahiri who heads up the research centres, said the new machine is able to detect 99% of all coronary artery disease including those in the benign phase. Among the research programmes currently being progressed at the Wellington, is the Radical Trial involving the study of 800 patients attending NHS chest pain clinics at Barnet General, Chase Farm and the Royal Free Hospitals.
